Anxiety STOPS with thanksgiving.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:6-7).

Don’t be anxious?  I feel like I stay in a state of perpetual anxiety.  I know it is due to my eyes being on man and not being focused on God.  Staying in my lane requires me to look straight ahead (Thanks Martha).  No deviation from left or right.  Focused on what lies ahead.

This anxiety follows me around like a demon nipping at my heels.

And I am, once again, guarding my heart and my mind because that is where satan attacks.  Our hearts.  Our minds.  Someone hurts my feelings which then hurts my heart.  I don’t understand something or I make a mistake and I hear “your are so stupid”, an attack on my mind.  There is only One who can guard those very vulnerable areas and that is my Jesus.  Looking to Him for approval.  Asking Him to protect my thoughts and knowing it is my Father’s Word, scripture, that will build up the walls that guard my heart and mind from attack.

When satan comes at my mind with “you are worthless” I counter with, “My Father says that I am fearfully and wonderfully made and I know that FULL WELL.

But the beginning of Psalm 139:14 , “I praise you…”

Giving thanks, giving Him praise.

That’s where the heart has to go in order to overcome the anxiety.  It has to become a heart of praise and thanksgiving in order to combat the fear and the anxiety.  It is impossible to be anxious and thankful at the same time.  Ann Voskamp taught me that in her book, “One Thousand Gifts” and then underlined and bolded it as our keynote speaker at She Speaks.

Leave me a comment listing at least 3 things you are thankful for.

One thousand things starts with the first.

  1.  His/his love. (God’s and WH)
  2. Her smile
  3. Coffee foam
  4. Words

What’s love got to do with it? (Repost)

Posted by Leigh on July 22, 2011 in Uncategorized |

Satan is trying to diffuse the biggest weapon God has placed in our arsenal. Love. Follow the link and read the following passage 1 Corinthians 13 but come back!!!!  Below are the first 3 verses.  Most of us skip those.  I know I did until God opened my eyes recently.

1If I speak in the tongues[a] of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames,[b] but have not love, I gain nothing.

Many of us, who have studied and read these verses, begin at verse 4 with “Love is patient” stop at “Love never fails” and that is so true but God is giving us something so important in the beginning and the end of this passage.

1If I speak in the tongues[a] of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

Speaking in the tongues of men and of angels. Men (the world) can speak pretty words. They can entice, encourage, compliment, and give assurance. The tongue of angels, in my opinion, are “pretty words” music, poetry, praise and exhortation. Don’t we hear those things over and over again throughout the day? In the media, the songs on the radio or on our Ipod, the books that we read or download to our Kindle, the movies that we watch or rent from Red box. Over and over again our brains are saturated with beautiful words that sound like love, but do they contain love? And bring it closer, how much of what we speak on a daily basis contains love? The way you speak to your spouse or your child? What you mumble under your breath in traffic or waiting in line at the grocery store? Are you a clanging cymbal or do your words flow like a soothing breeze over the hearts of those around you?

2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

Wisdom, prophecy, understanding what is to come, discernment, and faith. All things that we can correlate with God and so many “see” as Christianity, but we can easily be misled. There have been many prophets, preachers, teachers and proclaimers of Christ who were “wise”, who had “faith”, but the only love they felt was for themselves. I am not sitting in judgment of anyone, that is not my place, but we must ask the question of our spiritual leaders and of ourselves, is our wisdom and prophecy and faith focused on furthering our own agenda or is it supported by a love for Our Heavenly Father?

3If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames,[b] but have not love, I gain nothing.

Surrendering my body to the flames? Sacrificing for someone or for a belief. Well, that should be proof of what a “good Christian” I am. No, it’s not.

You can give all you have, but why are you doing it? We have to check our hearts and be honest with ourselves because God already knows your heart.  Are you “giving all you have” so that others will be impressed? Are you sacrificing and surrendering so that you can look like a “super Christian?” to those around you? Are you doing all that you are doing because you believe that you can be “good enough” that you can “give enough” or that your works will “be enough”.  It’s not good enough, you will never “give enough” and you will never be able to “do enough”.

I truly believe that the only way we can love, truly love the way 1 Corinthians instructs us, is to have God living in us and therefore through us.  We cannot do it on our own.  We don’t have the strength, the power, the capacity to love, truly love.  But God does.  Watch this. This is from scripture, not embellished, not interpreted, just truth from His word.  He’s talking to us.  The love that we are all searching for, it’s here my friend.

It’s Today It’s Today It’s Today

Remember the little boy from Stuart Little.  He woke up in the morning that his parents were going to go adopt a baby brother or sister and ran around the house yelling, “It’s today, it’s today, it’s today!”

That is what I feel like this morning.  It’s today!  Today I get to go with a wonderful friend on a road trip to a fancy hotel and hang out with 650 women who love them some Jesus.  We are going to the annual SheSpeaks conference that is put on by Proverbs 31 Ministries.  These are women that are writers, speakers, leaders, and even teens who feel a calling on their heart to spread the word about how wonderful and awesome and all the other great adjectives that you can come up with to describe God and tell about what Jesus has done in their lives.  It’s the most important message there is out there and it needs to be heard by everyone.  Someone told it to me.  Someone helped me to understand that all my stuff was just that, stuff, and what was so important was that I had a heavenly Father who loved me.  No matter what.  That’s the essence of scripture.  The essence of every persons story.  No matter what.

Because I will be totally immersed in learning more and talking a lot, and honing my craft, I’m not sure how much I will get to blog.  So, over the next few days there will be a lot of activity here because I am going to have some old posts run, things you might not have read  before and hey, I learned a lot by going back and reading, so you never know, even if you have read it, it might “read differently” now.

Please leave a comment, gimme some feedback.  Would love to know your thoughts and any input you might have.

For now, I gotta go get dressed and ready to go because “It’s TODAY!!!!!”

Lord, thank you thank you thank you for all you have given me.  I am blessed beyond measure and loved more than I know.  Father, be with all of my friends this week as they travel from all over the world to come together and learn more about how to do things YOUR way and not our own way.  Help us each one to have grace for each other, patience, and to know that everything that is done this weekend should have at it’s root a love for You.  Don’t let us get distracted, jealous, or insecure about ANYTHING because God, those things are not from You.  But help each woman rest in YOU this weekend and hear Your still small voice.   I pray for the P31 girls that are working so hard to put this together for us.  And bless the staff and  conference/hotel organizers, staff, and all who will be serving see YOUR love father in each of the women that they come into contact with.  Thank you Father for your SON and thank you for your love.
