Do I want to be called a Christian?

Posted by Leigh on April 3, 2012 in A to Z Challenge, Matthew 4:23 |

I am diving back into blogging. One of the ways I am going to be doing this is the A to Z challenge for April.  Today is the letter C.

I am very active in my local church but there are also several pastors I listen to on-line as well.  One is Andy Stanley from North Point.  I consider him an expert on speaking and leadership.  He is also an amazing pastor.

The topic he has been teaching on for the past few weeks is called “Christian”  and he tells the history of the word Christian.  His grasp of a topic and ability to put it in consumable form just blows me away.

He made a statement in his first teaching that some who believe in Jesus Christ will call themselves Christians, but then they feel like they have to follow it up with a qualifier.  Yep, me too.  I do believe in Jesus, but I’m not one of “those people”.   I will not throw my Bible at you and I won’t yell and scream and tell you you are going to hell.  I do believe that Jesus is the Truth and the Light and the Way but all I can proclaim is what he has done for me…I can’t tell your story. We can still have a discussion and I will be honest.  But I won’t hate you or judge you if you don’t believe.  I love you.  Thats what we are called as followers of Christ to do.

Do I want to call myself a Christian? How about being known by  my actions as just someone who loves Jesus.

23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.  Matthew 4:23 (NIV)
